Colorado CHP+ dental benefits after the July 2026 change

CHP+ is not the same dental benefit as Health First Colorado Medicaid. This guide centers the July 2026 DentaQuest materials and explains an unresolved mismatch on an older state webpage.

Effective July 1, 2026Dollar caps removed

DentaQuest's current member notice says the prior $1,000 dental maximum and $1,500 orthodontic maximum no longer apply to CHP+ members; all other benefit rules still matter.

01

What changed on July 1, 2026—and what did not

DentaQuest's May/July 2026 member notice and July 2026 provider update state that CHP+ removed its $1,000 maximum for covered dental services and its $1,500 orthodontic lifetime maximum effective July 1, 2026. The current member page now says yearly and lifetime dollar limits for covered services no longer apply.

Removing a dollar maximum does not turn every dental procedure into a benefit. Eligibility, covered-service definitions, age or pregnancy status, frequency limits, clinical criteria, Dental Home and network rules, and prior authorization remain in force. DentaQuest makes the actual benefit and authorization determinations.

02

Covered categories are a starting point

The current CHP+ member page lists diagnostic and preventive care plus treatment categories such as fillings, stainless-steel crowns, root canals, extractions, periodontal care, and dentures. Its benefit year information uses a January 1 through December 31 calendar year. The absence of a dollar cap does not remove procedure-level limits.

  • Ask whether the exact procedure code is covered for the enrolled child or pregnant member.
  • Ask whether recent services affect the frequency available in the current calendar year.
  • Ask whether records, X-rays, clinical measurements, or prior authorization are required before treatment.
  • Some CHP+ members may have applicable copays. DentaQuest's July 2026 update says providers accept program reimbursement as payment in full for covered care except applicable member copays; verify the amount before the visit.
03

Braces and prenatal coverage follow different rules

For enrolled children, the current CHP+ member page says orthodontic treatment is covered only when needed to correct a bite or jaw problem rather than for cosmetic reasons, and it lists 12 months of continuous CHP+ coverage before orthodontic treatment. Prior authorization and the separate CHP+ orthodontic criteria still apply.

The July 2026 CHP+ Office Reference Manual describes a prenatal dental benefit for enrolled pregnant members, but it does not include orthodontics in that prenatal benefit. Do not apply a child's orthodontic rules to a pregnant adult or assume that removal of the orthodontic dollar maximum expanded the clinical eligibility criteria.

04

Use the Dental Home and participating network

CHP+ assigns members a Dental Home for ongoing care. The DentaQuest member portal can show the assigned Dental Home and digital ID card. A directory listing is not a guarantee that an office is taking new patients or can provide a particular specialty service.

  1. 1

    Check the member portal

Confirm active CHP+ enrollment, the Dental Home, and the member ID before calling an office.

  2. 2

    Call the exact location

Ask whether it accepts the member's CHP+ plan, is taking new patients in the relevant age group, and can provide the needed service.

  3. 3

Ask about referrals or a Dental Home change

If specialty care is needed or the assigned office cannot schedule care, contact DentaQuest at the number on the member materials for current assistance.

05

Verify the case before care starts

Use this short script with both DentaQuest and the dental office.

  • Is CHP+ eligibility active on the planned date of service?
  • Is this dentist and address in the CHP+ network, and is this the assigned Dental Home or an authorized referral?
  • What exact services and codes are proposed, and are they benefits for this member?
  • Are frequency, medical-necessity, continuous-enrollment, or prior-authorization requirements satisfied?
  • Is any CHP+ copay due, and can the office explain it in writing before treatment?
